What results when you mix a globe, a photo printer, and a model – in this case Keira Grant.
Some Film with Melissa Troutt
A few years ago I bought a Canon AE1 film camera at a flea market. I’d actually purchased it for the lenses with the camera, and didn’t really see much need for the camera itself. I used it as a prop in a few shoot, but the camera needed some work to be usable for its real purpose.
Truthfully I never got around to that because I just didn’t have any interest in film at the time. Over the course of this year I did though decide I was interested in at least trying some work in film, and remembered the camera. With a little work it was ready to go. After a couple of misfires the first time I tried to use it in a shoot, I had better luck the second attempt with Melissa last month.
The change of waiting weeks for developed film in this case was interesting compared to the normal instant feedback that digital makes the norm. There were several photos that I just missed an exposure level or something that in a digital format would easily have been corrected. I’m mostly happy with the results though, and I’ve done a couple other shoots including some film since then that will come later. Film interests me right now, and I think will be part of my equipment list for at least the near future.

The type of thing that can happen if I watch old horror movies shortly before a shoot.

The result when I asked MissM4coroni to give me an intense look. I think she did just that.
A Little Shift of Direction
It’s been a pretty busy few months. I took a somewhat last minute trip to California again in October to work around Death Valley, and it’s been a very busy stretch since then. Posts here have been one casualty along with the Photo Links series I’d started. Facing reality, I’m going to posts with less commentary for a bit. There will likely still be the occasional longer entry, but a lot more just sharing photos. Starting with today’s of Theresa Manchester from a late summer shoot.
A Nymph in the Woods
I was introduced to Nymph by a mutual friend in the community while she was visiting the Asheville area late this summer. We met up and headed into the mountains to work in one of my favorite areas of Western North Carolina including a waterfall that will look familiar to regular visitors. She also was the first model I’ve worked with at a new nearby location that I’d scouted only a few weeks before.
The weather threatened a bit early in the shoot and at our first stop deep in a wooded cove we did have a little drizzle, but that soon left leaving those wonderfully lightly overcast skies perfect for shooting in the outdoors. The long days that time of year gave us almost perfect conditions in fact until the clouds thickened again toward evening. Great work by Nymph and looking forward to our next collaboration.
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here in the US. Also thanks to all who read these posts on my site or Tumblr.
My very busy few weeks that started about mid October should now settle down more to the normal level of busy so expect more posts coming soon.
Photo Links – October 14, 2014 (#8)
- Usually these things don’t interest me, but there’s an exception where Steven Soderbergh redoes Raiders of the Lost Ark as Black and White Silent Film.
- It seems that it’s all too common for people to define copyright as something like, “my stuff is a rare and precious gem.” Everything else is common property.
- I enjoy light painting and these light Painting Brushes look interesting.
- Not directly photography related, but analysis of sleep pattern by Jawbone. I especially took note in the section of the time zone differences in Tennessee and Kentucky. Having lived on both sides of the Eastern/Central time zone line I can relate to those details. It also serves as a nice reminder that Tennessee is split into two time zones which catches someone traveling through off guard at least a couple times a year.
