Hannah Perez and Monica Jade – The Falls Three

This actually was the first shoot chronologically in the early part of August. I shot with Bree a few weeks later and Viktoria a few days after that. Hannah always travels with good models and several times I’ve worked with someone for the first time when travelling with her though in this case I’d already worked with Monica for the first time earlier in the year. We planned to meet up near the location for a late morning shoot. In a trend of the month, the weather was threatening calling for about a 50/50 chance of rain even a couple days before. We decided to plan for the shoot to work and hope we got lucky.

We headed up to the location and got there and the weather was pretty cooperative. It was cloudy and the clear threat of rain was there, but not enough to feel we had no chance of getting the shoot completed. We even had a little sun to start, which was an unexpected bonus and curse. We started at the falls. Hannah and Monica work well together, a big advantage of pairing models that know each other before the shoot, and did wonderful work.

We also did the first of the meadow shots and really my favorite work there. The concept here came from talking with the models, the idea is the photographer is a bit of a voyeur coming across the two of them walking together in the woods. It worked nicely.

Some Glamour with Hannah Perez

Always enjoy getting the chance to work with Hannah.  She lately has also been bringing great people to work with along with her.  In our shoot in August she came through travelling with Angelique Kithos.  In this first set some glamour photos done with Hannah.  Don’t worry you’ll get to see Angelique and the two of them together soon.

Best Five Photos of 2011

The end of the year just invites reflection.  So on the last day of 2011 I’m going to look back at what I feel are five of my best photos of the year.  Notice the subtle shift from the title there?  Instead of just picking five photos, I decided to pick a few categories and pick the best photo in each one along with a little of the background behind the photo.  Fun thing is that since this is my blog I can be completely arbitrary and pick what I want.  As Mel Brooks said, “It’s good to be the king.”

My Best Photo of the Year

It came on a shoot in June, but this photo of Katlyn Lacoste I think has to be my best photo this year.  I thought so enough that I made it the cover of my eBook.  It’s not just me as 500px highlighted it in their “Fresh photos” the day I posted it to the site.  Everything just comes together amazingly with a great location, a wonderful model, and an amazing pose.  There were a number of great images taken here that day, but this one still stands out to me.

Best Processed Photo

I normally don’t believe in a lot of processing.  I try to get the photo right in the camera.  Of course I’ll clean up blemishes, tweak lighting, and other things, but normally I feel the longer I spend on a photo in Lightroom or Photoshop, the worse the photo was.  This one is an exception.  I documented the shoot before, but loved playing with the multiple exposure concept with Melissa Troutt and feel this is the best photo.  I love the effect of the model photographing herself and want to play with the multiple exposure concept more in the future.

Best Photo from Biggest Experiment

Most interesting experiment I did this year came when I did a shoot with Keira Grant, Hannah Perez, and Melissa Troutt back in late June.  Working with three models at once was an interesting experience.  It was very draining and required a lot of focus and work.  The results were wonderful, and I definitely want to try it again someday.  There were a lot of photos I could have picked to put here, but over time I’ve come to feel this photo best captures the idea of exploring the relationships between women.  What I think appeals to me also comes in other ways you can interpret the photo.  Why’s Melissa trying to pull away?  Why is Keria trying to stop her while Hannah appears indifferent?  So many ways you can answer those questions and each gives such a different story.

Best Erotic Nude

I haven’t shot much erotic over the last year, but I think it’ll be something I focus on more going into 2012.  Something about the erotic is appealing to me again as it hadn’t for the last bit.  I did one erotic themed shoot this year.  I have a bit of a poor track record on my shoots with two models with an intent to explore erotic ideas.  Seems like almost every one has something weird happen.  A model doesn’t show, we get kicked out of a place, etc.  Shoots with no erotic plans always go smoothly.  This one went wonderfully though so maybe my curse is broken.  Again a number I considered here, but in the end I think it’s the eye contact between the models that brings me back to this one.  It feels like we’re peering in just as they lose control.

Best Boudoir

The latest photo here, shot on December 23 with Brynn Cook.  I really love the intimacy of this photo.  It feels like the viewer is looking over at the model after waking in the morning.  I also feel the lack of nudity works as a strength since it gives it more of an intimate and less sexual feel.  I left in the cluttered background precisely because I feel it supports the casual feeling.

Two Bonus Photos

Okay I lied about five photos.  Here are two photos that really don’t fit in the theme, but I still want to highlight.  See above quote about the king.

Best Rediscovered Photo

Reason this one is down here it that I didn’t take it in 2011.  In fact I rediscovered it when I was sorting images for my eBook.  It’s a wonderful image I shot back in 2008 with a model I’d met on a trip to Raleigh the month before.  I think this might be the first image (or at least one of the first images) that I really nailed the lighting exactly the way I wanted it.  Again perfect lighting, wonderful model, and just an amazing expression on her face.

My Favorite Photo As I took It

Because it had been a long, hot day and this was very cold and refreshing.

Hope everyone had a great 2011.  Here’s to a even better 2012 (picture me raising the glass above).

An Outdoor Experiment in Three Parts–Keira Grant, Hannah Perez, and Melissa Troutt

Reaching Toward Another with Melissa Troutt, Keira Grant, and Hannah PerezAfter working with Keria Grant in mid May we discussed shooting again when she came back through the area in late June.  As we finalized the date for the next shoot, I developed the idea of pairing her with another model in an outdoor setting.  I’d taken two models on an outdoor shoot before with Melissa and Katlyn last fall with wonderful results, but felt I’d been too cautious and reserved in directing the shoot and not gotten all I could have out of such great models.  I got some great images from that shoot, but always felt that I could have done more and if I’d been a bit more daring I could have gotten even better images.

Left Out with Melissa Troutt, Keira Grant, and Hannah Perez I’ve mentioned my plans to experiment more this summer and as part of that plan I began to consider adding a third model to the shoot.  I’ve worked with two models several times, but never three.  I knew that adding another model would make things more difficult, but liked the additional possibilities it would add.

After lining up Melissa Troutt for the second model I also brought in a third model that I’ve worked with before in Hannah Perez.  The biggest challenge I face getting ready for the shoot came in finding the correct location.  I wanted a scenic outdoor location, but also needed a private one so three nude models could work for several hours without being concerned about onlookers.  Several possible locations wouldn’t work due to storm damage or just not meeting my needs.  I ended up deciding to use on one of the first locations that I scouted for the shoot back in early June while on another shoot.

Escape Attempt with Melissa Troutt, Keira Grant, and Hannah PerezThe weather forecast the morning of the shoot was just a bit menacing, but the rain held off and we had an amazing shoot.  Working with three talented models turned out to be a wonderful experience and almost every photo is great.  In fact the most difficult task in editing these images came in picking the best photos out of the those taken.  I honestly can say that I’ve not found myself with a greater ratio of great photos at the end of a shoot than this one.

Overall a lot of time and energy went into getting this shoot together and it’s not something I’d do every day in spite of the enjoyment and success.  It surprised me how much mental energy it took to direct the shoot and keep things moving.  This still was one of the most enjoyable shoots that I’ve ever done and worth all the effort put into it and I think the photos speak to that.

Interview with Model Hannah Perez

IMG_1951While shooting with Hannah Perez last month I had the opportunity to site down and do an interview with her about her thoughts on modeling, the lessons she learned from her worst photo shoot, and her aspirations.  Thanks to Hannah for taking some time to site down with me at the end of our shoot.

Bill: What type of model do you consider yourself?

Hannah: I would consider myself primarily an art model.  A figure model as opposed to a fashion or commercial model.

Bill: What do you hope to get out of modeling?

Hannah: Well ultimately I would like to get into fitness modeling because I think it’s something that’s going to offer me the most opportunities at least as far as length of time so that’s kind of my ultimate goal.  In the meantime I just enjoy the experience of being able to meet new photographers and other models and just having a blast doing all that.

Bill: How much do you travel for your modeling?

Hannah: I would say at least once a month I’ll make a trip out somewhere.  It’s usually in driving distance.  If I happen to be vacationing somewhere I’ll always try to line up some work, but most of the work I do is pretty local to me.  I’d say within an hour and a half to two hours of where I live.

Bill: You mentioned earlier that this is your first travelling type shoot going somewhere with the specific intent of working.

Hannah: Yea, this is my first time going into unfamiliar territory unaccompanied for a week’s time at that.

Bill: Hannah, what do you think makes a good model?

IMG_1727Hannah: I think it’s a little bit of everything.  It’s not just someone who has a pretty face or a good body, but someone who’s mindful of their position, their posing.  Somebody who kind of tries to put themselves in the photographer’s shoes and really kind visualize what the photographer is seeing.  Also somebody who is professional and courteous, punctual, and doesn’t flake out on other people and takes it seriously.

Bill: Do you think modeling is art?

Hannah: Oh absolutely I think it’s a form of art.  It’s a collaboration of artists getting together to produce image which is definitely a form of art.

Bill: So what drew you to doing nude work?

Hannah: I don’t really recall any impetus that said you need to be a nude model.  I think it’s something that just kind of fell in my lap and to tell you the truth I can’t remember exactly how it started, but once I got started I immediately felt comfortable in front of the camera so it was something I started to have a lot of fun with and decided if I can make a living doing this all the better.

Bill: Did you get any flak from family or friends when you first started doing nude modeling?

Hannah: No as a matter of fact I kept it and continue to keep it pretty discreet particularly among family members.  I don’t really share with them what type of modeling I do for the most part.  In my immediate family, some people know some people don’t.  For the most part everybody who knows is pretty supportive.

Bill: Tell me about your first nude shoot.  Were you nervous?  Did it go well?

IMG_1873Hannah: My first nude shoot started off clothes like a lot do.  I guess by the end of it I was fully nude.  Maybe to me that was an indication to me that I’d be good for this because I didn’t have any real apprehension about doing it.  I guess if you pick the right people to work with it’s a pretty natural experience.

Bill: Now how do you do on nude shoots?

Hannah: Well as I told you before I may be accused of being too comfortable because I don’t really distinguish between wearing clothes and not sometimes.  I’m very comfortable with it and I enjoy it more and more every time.

Bill: Tell me about the worst shoot you’ve ever had.

Hannah: Oh goodness.  Well, that’s a tough question because I’ve had bad shoots but not all for the same reason.

Bill: Tell me the one that really stands out in your mind as one you’re glad you don’t have to experience again.

Hannah: Well when I first started doing this I answered a craigslist ad against my better judgement and a guy had represented himself as the owner of a web site similar to natural nudes or natural babes or something.  I can’t remember.  When I got to the shoot at a hotel, it was an upscale hotel, but her was a little too touchy feely, he offered me wine, he tried to kiss me goodnight.  By the end of it I really felt he should have paid me a lot more to do what I had to suffer through during that shoot.  It was very unproductive.  I never got any images from it.  He wanted to work with me again and needless to say I didn’t give him that opportunity.

Bill: So what did you learn from that shoot?  What did you take away that helped you in the future?

Hannah: Well what I learned is to be very skeptical of Craigslist ads.  Do some research.  This is for photographers and models alike.  You never know what you’re getting.  Not to say that there are all frauds on Craigslist.  You always want to do your research and make sure this person is legitimate.  Do they have a work history ?  DO they have a web site with samples of their work?  Do they have references, etc?  That’s something you should really take the time to look into before working with anybody.

Bill: How do you define art?

Hannah: I think art is anything that really inspires or is thought provoking to somebody.  Anything that makes you stop and think.  Anything that captivates you.

Bill: What is the most controversial thing you’ve ever created?

IMG_1857Hannah: Not any more controversial than what a lot of models do which is dabbling into the adult side of the industry.  I don’t think I’ve done anything too outrageous.  I have worked in some bizarre environments.   Off the top of my head I can’t think of the most controversial thing.  Probably the involvement of some kind of adult toy.

Bill: Tell me what you think is too far to go?  Where do you draw that line?

Hannah: For me I will not work with male models period.  I will work with female models, but there are limitations there.  I’ll do sensual, artistic, or even erotic scenes with females.  I will not have sex with females.  I will do some more explicit solo work and that’s pretty much where I’d draw the line.  And of course no animals.

Bill: That’s a good line right there I think.  What’s something you’ve not done to this point that you’d really like to do someday in modeling?

Hannah: Oh gosh there’s so many.  I really would like to get into alternative type modeling.  Not really alternative, but I really want to work with photographer who produce really in your face thought provoking images.  There are too many concepts to mention here.  I think I would also like to try my hand at Playboy or Maxim or something like that.  OF course that would be quite an accomplishment.  Ultimately I’m really more focused on the fitness type modeling.

Bill: So a fitness magazine is your goal?  The day you’re on the cover of a fitness magazine you’ve made it.

Hannah: Sure, sure I think that would be a pretty definitive moment in my modeling career.

Bill: What’s one question you’ve already wanted to ask a photographer?  Anything you want?

Hannah: Most photographers I work with are pretty forthcoming.

Bill: You don’t do too long in this business unless you’re pretty open toward people.

Hannah: Yea.  There hasn’t been anybody I’ve sat there any really had to wonder about and come up with a story for because they were that mysterious.  Most photographers I’ve worked with have shared a lot and in some cases a little more than I thought was necessary.

Bill: Too much information.

Hannah: Sometimes.  I find it interesting.  I don’t think that question really applies to me because a lot of photographers if there’s anything I want to know, I ask them.  You know what they do for a living, how they got into photography, how long they’ve been in it, etc.

Bill: Last one silly question.  What do you sleep in?

Hannah: I actually hate sleeping nude.  It really bothers me.  I like to wear a nightgown or a tank and at least some undies if not a comfortable pair of shorts.  I’m a big fan of flannel in the wintertime.  There’s nothing sexy about my sleepwear.  It’s the truth it’s what’s most comfortable for me.

Bill: Thanks for taking some time to talk today.

Shoot with Hannah Perez

Had the chance to shoot with Hannah Perez back in mid August.  We had a great shoot in spite of me falling and pulling a muscle and getting caught in an absolute downpour of rain.

The first photo from that shoot is this one taken pretty early in the shoot in a natural pool along a mountain stream.  There are a series of small waterfalls like the one seen here that extend over toward the right as the water comes through a series of rocks.  This little pool is perfectly located and posing her against the rock I think perfectly fits with the quiet and serene feel to the location.
